Shoes

Shoes, how much money do you want to spend? How much money can you spend? What is your foot type? What's better zero drop or some other heel-to-toe off set? How much cushioning do you need?  Just stop already.  I've run in all sorts of shoes for all sorts of reasons and stayed away from certain types of shoes for the all same reasons.  In the past couple of years I've come to one conclusion, run in all types of shoes.  The trails we run on vary dramatically in the terrain type and so do the shoes that are 'designed' for a particular type of trail.  I've gotten to the point of 'Yea, whatever.'  The only thing I've been sure of is the type of out sole. Vibram, all the way.  I've only encountered one other out sole that was nearly as sticky, Goodyear.  Since Vibram have been a bit easier to find that's what I've been sticking with, this out sole sticks in nearly every environment I run.  As to the rest of it, get your feet strong. Do ankle strengthening work, do toe crunches, do the alphabet with your feet. The stronger your feet are the less likely you are to get foot pain/fatigue during your runs. Take time to run without shoes. Run in thick shoes and everything in between that and barefoot.  In my opinion unless under the care of a professional and have some sort of injury, run in everything because you become better adapted to all conditions.  Somebody is going to tell you that you do this or that when you run and so you need this or that type of shoe.  I've simply gotten to the point of saying 'Yup, thanks I'll keep that in mind.'  I've done some pretty long distances over some really rough terrain and for the most part my feet don't hurt any more. So just like the trail we run on vary, vary your shoes.
